The surviving Irish census records are among the most valuable sources for family history research. Complete census returns are available for 1901, 1911 and 1926 – providing detailed information about individuals, households, occupations, religious affiliations and places of birth.
Earlier census records have largely been lost due to the destruction of records over time, including the loss of many documents during the Public Record Office fire in Dublin in 1922. As a result, few complete census returns survive before 1901.
Researchers can, however, access surviving fragments of the 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 censuses, along with various census substitutes that may help trace ancestors before the twentieth century.
